At what point in time in the comments some guy asked why did Sidney Rigdon let a punkhead like Joseph Smith take control of the Church? Well, when one studies, Rigdon’s life, it seems that the guy always played second fiddle when it came to his profession as a pastor. I don’t think he had the charisma needed for the task. He was a great orator, a great writer, but not a charismatic leader. Even though he was first counselor and had been ordained by Smith as a “Prophet, Seer, and Revelator”, he couldn’t get the majority of the “Saints” to rally by him at the death of Joseph Smith. He even lost the ones that followed him back to PA.
One could also ask, why did he not refute the Book of Mormon? Why did he hold on to his testimony till the very end? I would contest that’s because of the very church he organized after Smith’s death. The Church of Jesus Christ to this day considers the Book of Mormon scriptures and they publish their own version. Hence it was essential for Rigdon to maintain that testimony, to keep face and maintain some semblance of dignity, despite his many failures.
